On Day 11, Dawn Shadwell, Partner in our ABL and Insolvency department discusses how the last year has impacted the Asset Finance sector and how PDT plans to further use technology in 2022.

What is your role at PDT?

I am a partner within the ABL and Insolvency department, I assist financiers in all aspects of their client journey from take on through to exit/insolvency, this could be advising the financier when onboarding a borrower with a specific funding requirement or advising the financier as to specific securities in order to reduce the risk to our client when making those facilities available or advising financiers in the event the relationship has gone wrong.

I have worked for PDT for over 23 years, starting as a trainee through to now as an equity partner. I’ve seen our Asset Based Lending practice grow together with combining this with our insolvency practice to create a holistic approach for our clients. Asset Based Lending was the first sector that we focused on as a firm when PDT was first formed over 30 years ago. Since then, we have become leading experts in the field. We work with a variety of clients from new fintech’s through to large bank or government backed funds.

What changes has 2021 brought you / your industry and your career?

Through both 2020 and 2021 I have noticed a lot of consolidation within the ABL market and a reasonable number of new start ups, whereas the insolvency element has been quiet for the ABL’s within the industry, we expect this will pick up as the coronavirus finance solutions start to fall away. This year has been a tough time for the industry as a whole. Notwithstanding this, our clients have been very resilient, and as this year has progressed we are seeing much more activity from a new finance perspective.

If Santa could bring you one gift that would help or improve your working life what would that be?

More hours in the day!

What are you looking forward to the most this Christmas?

I am looking forward to Christmas day with the family as we didn’t get that last year.

What’s the best or worst cracker joke you’ve ever heard?

Who hides in the bakery at Christmas?

A mince spy!

Any New Year’s resolutions?

As a rule I don’t make new year resolutions in January, but I do set myself a target from time to time.

What do you think 2022 will bring for you, your career and PDT going forward?

We have got lots of initiatives as a firm which I am excited about for 2022. I am particularly interested in moving forward how we as a firm use technology to assist in improving the client journey and their experience with PDT as a whole. I am also part of our ‘Each One to Teach One’ mentoring scheme where I hope to use some of my 23 years of experience to pass onto the bright and talented up and coming lawyers here at PDT.
