Boosted: Why secondment from PDT to BOOST&Co has given me a lift

Boost n. uplift, spur, encouragement, inspiration, stimulus

Boost v. to help or encourage something or someone to increase or improve

It is easy to see from these dictionary definitions why a finance house offering flexible funding to high growth SMEs would call itself ‘Boost’, and BOOST&Co are rightly proud of their brand. The funds they manage can indeed boost the performance of their business clients. But I have discovered some much needed uplift too!

I am in my third week seconded from PDT Solicitors as in-house lawyer to BOOST&Co’s CBILS facility, funded by Growth Lending. It has been a whirlwind of introductions and inductions, and work flowing apace through my virtual door. Everyone at BOOST&Co has been welcoming, friendly and endlessly patient with me as I get to grips with unfamiliar technology and processes.

And what a boost it has been! In early April I was furloughed as corporate work contracted for PDT and all commercial law firms. By the end of July, the delights of limitless free time had rapidly diminished and I was to be honest struggling emotionally with being “on the bench.” What has the experience so far taught me?

Happiness is being part of a team

Despite PDT keeping in touch being furloughed left me feeling disconnected. Now I have a valuable role to play and am really enjoying being part of a team again.

Learning new things boosts confidence

It has been a steep learning curve, not just returning to work but starting a new job. Meeting the challenge proves to me that I am more flexible and capable than I previously gave myself credit for.

Being closer to the frontline makes a difference

Working in-house I am dealing directly with those benefiting from my legal expertise, both lender and borrower. I am hearing why the business is a good prospect, and where it fits into BOOST&Co’s goals. I am helping to provide support for businesses affected by the pandemic and contributing in my own small way to economic recovery. That’s a good feeling.

Experiencing another culture is inspiring

PDT Solicitors and BOOST&Co both invest time and effort in developing an authentic and supportive culture, they share similar core values and understand the value good people and a positive culture can bring to an organisation. Like PDT, BOOST&Co is a stimulating place to work. I am constantly amazed by their collective energy, the ideas and initiatives flowing on a daily basis. They don’t just pay lip-service to their tenets but demonstrate them. This morning’s firmwide daily video call under the theme “August Awesomeness” reminded me of PDT’s “First Thursday” meetings, and included news about interesting businesses we may be funding, a marketing update on who is viewing the many articles BOOST&Co people have posted, a digital media challenge to share more posts, birthday wishes for a team member, update on Friday’s virtual quiz and the fun video challenge, an announcement that BOOST&Co’s ‘care package’ would now include free chocolate brownies and personalised coffee mugs, and an invitation to get your dog fix when employees bring their furry friends into the Cape Town office on Friday. All co-ordinated by Jenefer Morgan, Head of People, with warmth and positivity. It may sound a bit cheesy, but it works: I start the day feeling cheerful and inspired to do my bit for these lovely people.

Marketing, creative and HR professionals can make a massive difference

BOOST only have 35 staff but among them are marketing and HR teams, not to mention an art director and an organisational psychologist. Even after my short time here I can see the contribution they make both to the visibility of the lending product and the performance of my colleagues, as well as enriching the company’s culture. It is opening my eyes to new ways of working that I can share with PDT.

Responsibility brings rewards

It is down to me to make a success of the secondment; the responsibility of being a sole in-house lawyer is thrilling but daunting, and PDT’s whole-hearted support whilst I find my feet has been fantastic. Undoubtedly this secondment is going to make me a better lawyer, with a deeper understanding of finance clients’ needs and improved drafting and communication skills. The links forged between PDT and BOOST&Co will hopefully flourish into a fruitful and long-standing relationship. Everyone benefits, but it starts with me doing my very best.

So I say a massive thank you to both BOOST&Co and PDT Solicitors for giving me this amazing opportunity for personal and professional growth, and a much needed boost. I am looking forward to the weeks ahead – and the chocolate brownies!
